Description

A very interesting object nestled in the constellation of Cassiopeia at a distance of 9900, a bright emission nebula that also houses a little star cluster, NGC 7510 in the top left. Its interesting to see the balance of oxygen and hydrogen dancing around each other in the centre, especially love the filament of oxygen south of centre.

This project started out as a 4 panel mosaic but the realisation soon set in that I was going to need a huge amount of integration time to get the level of detail I wanted in the nebulosity with an OSC, so I have imaged just SH2 157.

It was an interesting one as the moon was straddled around full so the noise in the Oiii channel was immense. A lot of work was required to reduce the noise and seperate it from the nebulosity. Lesson learned here is don't attempt Oiii when the moon is around AND this type of project is better served with mono. Finally this object was quickly disappearing behind my house and into a light dome so was limited for time.

In ALL my previous images, I have had banding which has been a pain to handle so I increased the number of calibration frames by double, which seems to have solved this, much easier to process. As there are very subtle changes in colour and lightness range (I sacrificed detail for NR and smoothness), a camera with a better bit depth would defo help........... one day

If I had more time I would have added several more hours but it is what it is.
