Description

Here's the latest astro photo from Blueberry Hill. This time it's Sharpless 101, the Tulip Nebula. It's located in the constellation Cygnus (the Swan) and is a mere 6000 light years from Earth. It's an "emission nebula" which means the light areas are gas that is being ionized by stars and emitting light. The dark lanes at the base of the "flower" are dust clouds in front of the gas. If you look carefully you can see that the dust clouds extend downward and to the right, blackening the sky background beneath the nebula.
