Description

Tadpole Nebula (IC 410 / NGC 1893)
  • Type: Emission nebula with embedded open star cluster (NGC 1893)
  • Distance: Approximately 12,000 light years from Earth
  • Size: Roughly 100 light years across
  • Apparent size: 40 x 30 arc minutes
  • Apparent magnitude: 8.8 for the cluster (NGC 1893), the nebula (IC 410) is fainter
  • Age: About 4 million years (for the cluster NGC 1893)
  • Constellation: Auriga

IC 410, known as the Tadpole Nebula, is an emission nebula located in the constellation Auriga. The region is best known for its striking features: two long streamers of gas and dust that resemble the tails of tadpoles. These tadpoles point away from the central open star cluster, NGC 1893, which is a young cluster embedded within the nebula. The tadpoles are believed to be sites of ongoing star formation, sculpted by the intense radiation and stellar winds from the young stars of NGC 1893. They're dense, elongated pockets of interstellar material, and each "tadpole" is about 10 light-years long.Details accurate to the best of my knowledge from research done in 2022.
