Description

The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) is a face-on grand spiral galaxy and was the first one ever to reveal its spiral structure in 1845 by Lord Rosse using a 72-inch telescope in Ireland. But back then, 'spiral nebulae' were not recognized as galaxies until Edwin Hubble in the early 1920's.
There are actually 2 galaxies here that have collided and their intense interaction is causing a lot of activity.
Besides the many young massive bright blue stars and glowing reddish-pink stellar nurseries. Many stars have been far-flung leaving a tidal stream of stars surrounding the galaxies. These faint tidal streams are difficult to show in an image and my goal here was to gather enough image data to reveal them.
