Description

This image shows a star field in the southern constellation of Monoceros at a declination of -6 degrees. It may not seem like a spectacular space image, but it is one of my favorites.

I publish an astrophotography image of the week on the local community web site. One of my Onalaska friends, Shirley, enjoys my weekly images and recently shared with me her story about DBB’s Star. This star is named after her son, Daniel. Many years ago, Daniel was hit and killed by a car while chasing after his brother when he was 4 years old. A thoughtful acquaintance used the International Star Registry to name a star after Daniel. That star was uniquely registered in Daniel’s name as DBB's Star in the registry database on Christmas Day in 1994. Shirley shared the star's registry certificate with me with the exact location information.

I asked Shirley if she had ever seen her son’s star in the sky, and she said she had not. That did not come as a surprise to me, since these "named" registry stars are not visible with the naked eye. So I promised her that, once the star came around again this year, I would image it for her and print it out on a metal wall print to help remember and honor her son’s memory. It turns out that DBB’s Star is a beautiful blue medium brightness star in a lovely star field. I added some fake diffraction spikes to highlight the star in the image. Each year on January 4, his star is overhead at midnight.

The hobby of astrophotography has many facets – beauty, science, fine art, technology, and understanding the universe to name a few. But sometimes it has aspects that touch and fill our heart and soul. I was thankful to be able to help out my friend Shirley see her son’s star in the sky.
