Description

This interesting barred spiral galaxy is located 230 million light years away in the constellation of Vulpecula at a declination of +27 degrees.  This 12.3 magnitude galaxy spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a Milky Way sized diameter of 120,000 light years.  This galaxy seems dimmer to me than its magnitude would suggest.

The disk structure is fascinating to me.  A long bar stretches across a circular core.  Two brighter ansae regions lie at each end of the bar.  A pseudo-ring of arm fragments circles the inner region.  Where these fragments extend into the outer disk, VV rows are seen.  Some faint star clusters and HII regions are also seen throughout the disk.

Something is or has disturbed this galaxy, but I don’t see any culprits around.
