Description

NGC 2170, The Angel Nebula, is a faint dusty reflection Nebula and stellar nursery that formed 6 to 10 million years ago at the edge of a giant star-forming molecular cloud, Monoceros R2 (Mon R2), some 2,700 light-years away in the constellation of Monoceros.

A reflection nebula is dust being illuminated by a nearby star.  Technically, NGC2170 is just the bright blue nebula in the core of this image.  This image contains other blue reflection nebula, in addition to a red/orange emission region, a lot of dark absorbtion nebulae, and a plethora of colorful stars in the background.

Imaged from my backyard bortle 4 skies in the hills of western NC, USA.  The image consists of 100 300s subs, or 8.3 hours of exposure.  Captured with an Esprit 120ed Telescope at 840mm, paired with an ASI2600MC astrophotography camera and OPT L-Pro broadband filter, riding an EQ6r Pro mount.  Image acquisition controlled by APT, guiding with PHD2, and manually processed in PixInsight.

I hope you too enjoy this little gem in our night sky.
