Description

Seemingly wrapped in a misty layer, this spiral galaxy in Leo has patchy arms that are thought to be a result of self-propagating star formation.  In this model, supernovas spew enriched gases into space, some of which generate new stars, the formation of which creates shock waves and stellar winds that stimulate further star formation.

Some of the molecular clouds have been subjected to such powerful forces that they have escaped the galactic plane, giving an appearance of tidal debris.
