Description

NGC 6946 The Fireworks Galaxy is a beautiful spiral galaxy in Cygnus. It lies a distance of 22 Mly.

It is 40,000 light years across, and is in the direction of the galactic plane of our Milky Way. Because of this, it is obscured by interstellar matter, ie.. dust. You can see the dust clouds in the whole frame of the image. It was tricky to draw it out in post processing, but I think I did a descent job pulling it into view. I also included in my framing NGC 6939 an Open Cluster.

I was inspired to capture this object after my friend and fellow AB member Michael Feigenbaum posted it. I will be happy if my version is a quarter as good as his.

There are a lot of wild fires burning in AZ right now... I captured this through some faint smoke in the atmosphere. The smoke pretty much obscured the sky anything lower than 15 degrees above the horizon!
