Description

This is my 2nd attempt at shooting M42. My first attempt was at a focal length of 30mm, which I quickly realized is not good for this target. This image was shot from a Bortle 4 zone in a single night after the moon had already set. I recentered and refocused the object every 150 frames.

Lights - 2650 @ 2s | 210mm | ISO 6400 | F/6.3
Darks - 153
Biases - 205
Flats - 165

The worst part about processing such data is the temporary space requirement. I had to stack this off of my external hard drive as it required almost 1.8TB of free space for calibration + debayering + registering + integrating. I think around 2500 frames is the limit of what I can shoot and stack untracked given this bottleneck.

I also had to process this multiple times to get a satisfactory result after I was done stacking.

Surely my most time consuming project so far, and hopefully the least time consuming one when I look back.

Any critiques are welcome
