An object taken over two years of acquisition. We cropped the picture to emphase the Helmet, wich is no a so large object !
HaOO for the nebula, RVB for the stars.

About NGC2359 :

Thor's Helmet (NGC 2359) is an emission nebula located in the constellation Canis Major, at a distance of approximately 15,000 light years from Earth.
It was discovered by William Herschel in 1785.NGC 2359 is a cosmic cloud in the shape of a winged helmet, reminiscent of the helmet of the god from Norse mythology. It is an interstellar bubble of about 30 light years across, blown by strong winds from the giant hot star HD 56925.It is a Wolf-Rayet (WR7) star of magnitude 11.7. Compared to the Sun, it is about 16 times more massive, 280,000 times brighter, and its surface temperature reaches 112,000 K. Its destiny is to end up as a supernova. The Wolf-Rayet stars (so named in 1867 by Charles Wolf and Georges Rayet of the Paris Observatory) are former blue giants that have left the main sequence. They have two main characteristics:
  • • They have burned all the hydrogen in their hearts. To maintain their balance, they are therefore forced to fuse heavier nuclei, helium first, then carbon and oxygen afterwards. This phase can last about a million years.
  • • They eject a lot of matter, by means of powerful and violent stellar winds, whose speed reaches 2000 km / s. This rapid wind made up of opaque material explains the particular spectroscopic profile of these stars, in the form of broad emission lines, without visibility of the star's continuum. If the dominant lines come from nitrogen, we speak of a WN star; for WC star carbon and for WO star oxygen.
