Description

The region included in this cutout of a wider shot, which also included M16, is the Sh2-54, a large emission nebula visible in the Constellation of the Snake's Tail. It is an extended region of HII in which various phenomena of stellar formations, a large number of protostars, some even of great mass and several infrared sources are active. The older star population in this region has an average of 4-5 millions years and its components are grouped in the open cluster Ngc 6604, dominated by HD 167971, a triple star system of Supergiant Blue, recognizable just above the center of the photo (the three very white stars to the limit of the burnt) Sh2-54 is part of a vast nebulous system that also includes the nearby Eagle Nebula and Omega Nebula, which are also linked to two large OB associations, known as Serpens OB1 and Serpens OB2. The star formation processes currently active in the nebula are concentrated mainly in the northern part, where there is a dense cocoon indicated with the initials M1-88 or Gum 85, visible on the left of the upper part of the photo, to the west of the triple system at the limit of the black sky background.
This beautiful and colorful portion of the sky represented a real surprise for me because in a previous processing of the shot, which also included M16, I was unable to bring out colors and details.
Technical data: Crop of a shot of about 1h 40 with Nikon D750, Taka 106/530 and L-Pro filter. Having lost the original files, the reworking was carried out starting from a Jpeg unfortunately ruined by an erosion filter in the previous session.
