Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as UGC 5814, is a disturbed spiral galaxy located 0.5 billion light years away in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +77 degrees. Excluding the star streams, this magnitude 14.8 galaxy spans 0.6 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 90,000 light years.

This galaxy was classified by Dr. Arp into the odd category of Galaxies Disturbed with Interior Absorption. All of the galaxies in this category have strong dust lanes and are either elliptical galaxies or edge-on spiral galaxies.

The four interesting aspects of this disturbed spiral galaxy are the mid-line dust lane, the bright squarish central bulge, the severely warped disk, and the star stream which extends from upper left to lower right. I don’t see any obvious disturbance candidates in the area.
