Description

This planetary nebula, also known as both Kohoutek 1-11 and PN G215.6+11.1, is located 2800 light years away in the constellation of Canis Minor at a declination of +3 degrees.  It is a magnitude 15 PN.

We are looking at this bi-polar PN from a side-on view.  The bright central torus section is the only part of the nebula that can be seen visually.  It spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a span of 2 light years.  Counting the full length of the hour-glass shaped nebula, including the pair of faint break-out lobes, doubles the size to 4 light years.

Like many PN, the outer rim is stronger in HII while the inner section is more balanced with OIII.  The progenitor star is a bit too faint to be seen in my image.
