Description

This object is a spiral galaxy located 120 million light years away in the constellation of Aquarius at a declination of -8 degrees. This galaxy spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large diameter of 150,000 light years. We are looking at it about 20 degrees from edge-on.

Despite our viewing angle, we are able to see quite a bit of the interesting galaxy structure. The core is bright, surrounded by a yellow mid-region area. In this region, the galaxy arms have evolved into numerous rings. The outer disk has purple and blue tinges and is sprinkled with star clusters.

The most striking feature of this galaxy is the void area in the outer disk. Strangely, I have not been able to find an explanation for this interesting phenomenon, which I have rarely seen in galaxies and none as prominent as this. The disturbance of a companion is the typical explanation but I don’t see any companion candidates here. This is a small spiral galaxy above and left of NGC 7606, but it looks to be far in the distance.
