Description

NGC 3115 is a galaxy in Sextans. Also known as the Spindle galaxy, it lies about 32 million light years away. It is classified as a lenticular galaxy, one with a disk and a central bulge of stars, but no detectable spiral pattern. Galaxies such as this are thought to have consumed most of the dust and gas in the past, so there is nothing to create new stars. The yellow color, indicating mostly older stars, supports this theory. We are seeing it viewed edge-on from our perspective.
