Description

The yearly trial of the Wizard. I obtained the Hα a while ago, needed to wait for some time to get the OIII and SII data, the weather is still "summer" like, and that means in Florida mostly cloudy nights. The moon was shining brightly for the OIII and SII, which made probably a slight difference, even in narrow band. I used my achromat for the whole series, and it turned out ok. Still some problems with the tilt in the image train, I tried to resolve but there are limits to do it.

I compared this image with my image from last year, turned out actually very similar, still a notch better, in 20 years I might have a perfect one 😊.

Some processing facts: Noise reduction routines were not used at all. I needed to use 10 minutes exposures for the OIII channel since the 5 minute exposures did not really pull out the nebula. I was more than happy to see that this was possible with the MyT, good polar alignment and good calibration helped a lot. I used those 10 minute exposures for the starless version, while using the other OIII data for the "standard" image with stars, not highly stretched. The stars were again obtained with the setup:

R= 45% Ha + 55% SII

G = 10% SII + 20% Ha + 70% OIII

B = 10% Ha + 90% OIII.

I still did not find a way to smoothen nebula sufficiently, tried several methods but without success. Maybe more integration time, but the clear nights are so rare that it is hard to do (one always wants more other targets). I will try to follow Georges path to gather year by year more data, would be nice if that would work out.

Enjoy life and stay safe!
