Description

This bright galaxy, also known as Caldwell 48, is a magnitude 10.5 flocculent spiral galaxy located 66 million light years away in the constellation of Cancer. The galaxy's apparent size to us spans 5 arc-minutes, which corresponds to a diameter of about 100,000 light years.  We are looking at this galaxy halfway between face-on and edge-on.

The structure of this galaxy is fantastic. Moving out from the bright spherical core, I count as least 6 different types of concentric circular regions including dark dust lanes, star forming areas, and a wispy wide outer ring. I also see many star clusters. The typical spiral arm structure is not present.

I love the galaxy cluster seen through the outer disk at 11 o’clock.  I haven’t been able to identify this cluster.  If these galaxies are 100,000 light years in diameter, the cluster is located 2 billion light years away.
