Description

North is to the right in this image. The Open Cluster in this image is NGC 2506. It is also known as Melotte 70 and Collinder 170. It is also inthe Milky Way Star Cluster (MWSC) catalog - [KPS2012] MWSC 1406. This is an an old star cluster greater than 1.6 billion years old. It has a number of red stars and Red Giant Branch (RGB) stars, but it also has a number of member stars that appear to be younger spectral types despite its estimated age. Its distance is estimated at a little less than 11,500 light years. These objects and some bright stars are identified in the annotated image. Horizontal FOV is approximately 38 arc minutes (0.71 arcsec/pix image scale on the full size image).
