Description

This object is a barred spiral grand design galaxy located 55 million light years away in the southern constellation of Fornax at -36 degrees declination. The 10.3 magnitude galaxy spans about 10 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 160,000 light years.

This galaxy is enormous in size, much bigger than the Milky Way. The two grand arms are long, distinct and symmetric, containing numerous blue star clusters and several faint Ha regions. Two interesting dark lanes spiral into and slightly around the core. The color contrast is obvious between the older white stars of the barred core and the younger blue stars of the spiral arms.

This galaxy has been nicknamed the Dipterous Galaxy, which means having two wing-like appendages, although I will still refer to it as NGC 1365.
