Description

NGC 7822 is a young star forming complex in the constellation of Cepheus. The complex encompasses the emission region designated Sharpless 171, and the young cluster of stars named Berkeley 59. The complex is believed to be some 800–1000 pc distant, with the younger components aged no more than a few million years. The complex also includes one of the hottest stars discovered within 1 kpc of the Sun, namely BD+66 1673, which is an eclipsing binary system consisting of an O5V that exhibits a surface temperature of nearly 45,000 K and a luminosity about 100,000 times that of the Sun. The star is one of the primary sources illuminating the nebula and shaping the complex's famed pillars of creation-type formations, the elephant trunks.[Source: Wikipedia]

The NGC 7822 cluster features prominently in Frontier Development's Elite Dangerous, where it contains a large number of fictional stellar black holes.

CAPTURE Information:

The image was captured with the iOptron CEM120 mount , the venerable Meade 12"LX200 SCT, and my Atik 383L+ m CCD at F7.16 (2182mm FL). Image subs were taken through Astronomik's narrowband filter Ha. Subs were done at 1x1 bin, -10C, at 10 minutes each.

Panel 1: 35 subs (5.83hr) on Sep 20th, 21st, 22nd, 25th and 26th.

Panel 2: 35 subs (5.83hr) on Sep 21st, 22nd, 24th, 25th and 26th.

Panel 3: 35 subs (5.83hr) on Sep 21st, 22nd, 24th, 25th and 26th.

Panel 4: 35 subs (5.83hr) on Sep 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, and 26th.

This is a MOSAIC. So a lot of photons were gathered for each panel. You can click on the small image, in the upper right on the left, (under the "Revision" text and designated as "Original") to visualize how the four (4) Panels fit together. Your should be able to see the areas of overlap between the panels prior to finish processing. Most of the labor was in stitching the panels into one whole. This was done using Pixinsight software and following the tutorial of David Ault (Trapped Photons website). Once blended, the image was stretched, smoothed a bit, and highlighted slightly.

North is to the right (I think), and this is a slight crop due to the misalignment accumulation from so many different filters and times.

COMMENTS:

There's really nothing significant about this image. The Sharpless 171 emission cloud is kinda interesting. I had recently gotten the itch to do a mosaic, and it usually takes just one to cure me for a couple of years. It's quite a bit of work, with never the payoff I would prefer.
