Description

Messier 60

Messier 60 is an elliptical galaxy in the constellation of Virgo approximately 57 Mly away. It was discovered by Johann Gottfried Koehler in 1779. The spiral galaxy NGC 4647 that appears to be near by is not visibly interacting gravitationally with M60, suggesting that these galaxies are not actually physically near each other, although more recent data from the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that some interaction may have just begun.
