Description

The Statue of Liberty Nebula - NGC3576 - an emission nebula in the Sagittarius arm of our spiral galaxy, some 9000 light years distant.

Here two batches of data (acquired in 2018 and 2021) is combined to double the exposure on this object to 6 hours 36 mins.

Enormous loops of gas are expelled by dying stars. Star factories are embedded in the intensely illuminated portions of the nebula, whilst dense knots of dark gas (Bok globules) that comprise the head and arm of the statue are sites from which future stars will condense under gravity and ignite by nuclear fusion reactions. Outflowing stellar winds continually sculpt the nebula whilst ultraviolet radiation from young, newly birthed, hot blue main sequence stars ionise the hydrogen gas causing it to glow.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have also been detected in NGC3576, and their presence in our sun’s formation nebula 5 billion years ago would likely have been an important step in the development of carbon-based life on earth.
