Description

This is M82 on the left and M81 (also known as Bode's Galaxy) on the right. They are actually neighbors in space at a distance of 11.7 million light years and not just an optical pair. Gravity from M81 is disrupting the area and causing interstellar hydrogen to fall into the nucleus of M82 producing explosive starbirth activity. This can be seen as the red tendrils expanding out from M82's core.
