Description

This object, also known as LBN 568, is an HII emission nebula located 12,000 light years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia at a declination of +60 degrees. The nebula spans 8 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of almost 30 light years.

Above and right of Sh2-168 is the slightly larger, but much fainter HII nebula Sh2-169.

I find the sharp-edged areas within the HII nebula of bright starlight and dark dust bands to be unique and beautiful. HII regions such as this one typically have less distinct, fuzzier light and dark areas.
