Description

I have been missing imaging the planets, so I woke up early in the morning to get a glimpse of Jupiter and Saturn. As I finished with those targets, seeing was still reasonable, and I was able to capture this image of the Sinus Iridum region. It is always striking to me how different these features look in the later stages of the lunar cycle versus 14 days earlier. The local angle of the sunlight with respect to the surface makes a huge difference!

The moon was only 20 degrees above the horizon for this image (32% illuminated). With this in mind, it is difficult to approach the sharpness / resolution possible when the moon is higher in the sky under such conditions. Nevertheless I was pleased with the amount of detail that I was able to bring out, given my limited skill level.

The image is a two-panel mosaic, taken with my ZWO ASI 178 M monochrome CMOS camera. Images were taken through a 610 nm high-pass R+IR filter. The best 50% of approximately 8000 frames were used in each panel. While seeing was good, the conditions weren't quite enough to merit a Barlow lens, so this image was taken at the native focal length of the C8. Looking at the image closely, I suspect I was likely close to critical sampling (particularly given the small 2.4 micron pixel size used in the IMX 178 chip used in my camera.)
