Description

This object is a globular cluster located 30,000 light years away in the constellation of Sculptor at a declination of -27 degrees. The cluster spans 13 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of just over 100 light years.

I really like this cluster for three reasons. First, the "looseness" of the core area, with stars easily able to be resolved because there is no bright core glow to obscure our view. This object is one of a minority of low-concentration globulars, with its stars more loosely bound together. Second, the wonderful star colors. In fact, in some ways this object seems more like an open cluster than a globular cluster, especially with the bright blue and orange stars. Third, don't miss the faint low surface brightness galaxy (GSA N02) on the left side just outside of the cluster core. The galaxy is over 10,000 times further away from us, at a distance of about 400 million light years.
