Description

With a break between storm systems I had about four hours to shoot. This is not an easy target for the RedCat + Canon, but I was really curious what I could actually image from the area. In the end, the difficult exploration was more interesting than finding an easy target.

Lambda Orionis, also known as Meissa, is in the head of Orion. It is an O8III giant sporting a distinctly light blue cast. The star is a binary system that is the center of a large, very loose young open cluster (Collinder 69) containing a wide variety of star types, including several Class O giants, a variety of young mainstream stars, brown dwarfs and a few T-Tauri stars.

Meissa itself generates huge amounts of UV energy that has resulted in a large ring of nebulosity that is designated Sh2-264. The Lambda Orionis Ring, as it is called is part of the larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex (OMCC).
