Description

IC 5146 Cocoon Nebula

The Cocoon Nebula is both an emission nebula (it emits light) and a reflection nebula (parts are visible due to light reflected from other sources) and is located in the constellation Cygnus.  It is a cluster of newly formed stars, considered to be a stellar nursery, with the central star being estimated at only 100,000 years old (compared to the sun at over 4.5 billion years old).  It is about 4,000 light years from Earth and roughly 15-light years in diameter.
