Description

I took a series of 10 lights while Sadr was still low in the sky, early in May 2020. I warmed up my memory of this region in doing some visual work prior to imaging, using my 10" Orion XT dob (now in the permanent stewardship of my fellow astronomer, Kevin W.).

Sadr and then Deneb rising out of the east in the spring is among my favourite celestial events.

This was taken at the cabin, which is very remote, a couple of hours north of my city.. the skies are nice and dark. Also, its still cold enough that the insects are nonexistent.

Unguided, 10 x 120 sec, lens stopped to f2.8, ISO 1600. It would have been nice to get more time on this target, but I was imaging a number of different objects on this night.

"The Gamma Cygni nebula consists of various patches of nebulosity surrounding the star Gamma Cygni, at the center of the Northern Cross in the constellation Cygnus, the Swan.

Known by the proper name Sadr, the bright magnitude-2.2 star γ Cyg also lies at the center of IC 1318. This nebula features a complex of stars, dark dust clouds, and glowing nebulae along the plane of our Milky Way galaxy. It spans over 3 degrees - six Full Moons - and includes the open star cluster NGC 6910.

Gamma Cygni is not actually part of this nebula; it is a foreground star located between us and the nebula. Some distance estimates for γ Cyg place it around 750 light-years away, while estimates for IC 1318 and NGC 6910 range from 2,000 to 5,000 light-years. In any case, the Gamma Cygni nebula is located deep in the Orion arm of the galaxy."
