Description

This object is a Sharpless emission nebula located in the constellation of Orion at a declination of -6 degrees. This image captures the emission nebula, associated dark nebula, and several faint blue reflection nebulae created by the nearby bright star Rigel.

The blue reflection nebulae threw me off at first. These objects don't show up as typical reflection nebulae - it just looks like two washed out blue regions in the image. I assumed I had a poor flat calibration or some other issue, since the blue color is so faint that it just looks like the image is "off" a bit. But checking other images, these regions are not artifacts but exist because of Rigel.

The tiny bright red arc in the center of the darkest nebula is the Herbig-Haro object HH 240. Several other tiny red HH objects can be seen nearby. Many other nearby HH objects are hidden from view in the clouds.

This object is best captured with a setup that has a wider field of view.
