I've given this image the sub title of "Pillars in Vulpecula" due to the obvious similarity to the Pillars of Creation which are found in Messier 16 - the Eagle Nebula. The main catalogued object in this image is Sharpless 2-86, the large reflection nebula dominating the field of view. Sh2-86 is an emission nebula glowing red under the influence of the bright open star cluster in the centre of the image (NGC6823). There is also a small reflection nebula (NGC6820) at the 10 o'clock position which is reflecting scattered light from the nearby stars. The intricate structures found in the SH2-86 nebula and surrounding field make for an eye catching display along with the dark dusty structures that run across the field.

The nebula is rather faint and requires some dedication in terms of exposure time to capture all of the detail. Given the relatively northern declination of SH2-86, this takes some work when imaging from my southerly latitude of 33.5d south. I could only get to this object for about four hours per night but was fortunate during August and September to have enough clear nights sufficient to complete the data capture. Total integration time finished up at over 30.5 hours.

SH2-86 and the open cluster NGC6823 are approximately 6,000 light years from Earth.
