Description

Large, densely populated open cluster of stars, named after its discoverer the 18th century British astronomer Caroline Herschel. The cluster is about half a degree in apparent diameter, about the same as our moon, which at a distance of approx. 8000Ly makes it about 70 Ly across. The cluster is estimated to be 1.7 billion years old, and a good number of its more massive stars have branched off from the Main Series and become red giants.
