Description

June Gloom is in full swing in Southern California... So while night-time skies are closed for business, I am trying to work on processing of some data from early May.

This image was captured on May 4 (Star Wars Day!) starting around 2 am, on a night that was especially clear and dry IIRC. I wasn't happy with my initial processing attempts, but now, after spending some more time on it, I'm a bit more satisfied with the result.

This was initially stacked and processed in Siril, with additional post-processing in photoshop and a final pass through Topaz Denoise. In Photoshop I adjusted the RGB curves independently, and applied levels with masking to darken the background and increase contrast between the ring, the galaxy, and the center of the ring. The image was captured with my Celestron EdgeHD 9.25" and my newly acquired .7x reducer. I've uploaded both the original version and a cropped version: I feel like the image looks pretty decent even when cropped or zoomed in. I'm mainly happy that you can clearly see IC 1296, and some color detail in the ring structure, which (I think) is not too bad for a 70 minute exposure in a ~Bortle 8 zone. :-)
