Description

After collecting 12 hours on NGC2020 and company within the LMC (still to be processed), I decided to chase some "instant gratification" with this 9 minute exposure quickie on the open cluster Messier 47 in Puppis.

With about 50 members, it is one of the least densely populated open clusters known. It contains many prominent luminous blue stars, a few older red giants, and two K-type orange giants each about 200 times more luminous than the Sun. The cluster is spread across an area of around 30 arc minutes, about the angular area of the full moon, and formed around 60 million years ago. There is no remnant nebulosity in this cluster, unlike the well known Pleiades cluster.

M47 is located in the constellation Puppis. Puppis used to be part of the much larger constellation Argo Navis, which represented the ship on which Jason and the Argonauts sailed to get the Golden Fleece, before the constellation was divided into several smaller ones: Carina (the keel), Vela (the sails) and Puppis (the stern).
