Description

This image of the northern boundary of the constellation Corona Australis, or the Southern Crown, shows the bluish reflection nebulae NGC6726 and NGC6727 near the centre, with huge dust clouds spanning a rich field of stars.

Above and to the left of the nebulae is the magnificent globular cluster NGC 6723. Although NGC 6723 appears to be part of the Corona Australis group, its ancient stars are 30,000 light-years beyond the young stars of the Corona Australis dust clouds.

The smaller yellowish, fan-shaped reflection nebula NGC 6729, also known as Caldwell 68, surrounds and extends out from the young variable star R Corona Australis (RCa, nearer to the top left in this image) toward its companion T Corona Australis (TCa, nearer to the bottom right in this image).

Toward the right lies the bluish reflection nebula IC 4812.

Also visible are gam-CrA and eps-CrA, two of the stars forming the Corona Australis constellation.

The boomerang-shaped dusty dark nebula known as Be157, or the Corona Australis Molecular Cloud, blocks light from more distant background stars in the Milky Way, and is one of the closest star-forming regions to Earth at about 430 LY away.

Description: I edited the original image to restore colour balance - in the previous image the colour of the stars was bleached out.

I was amazed to be able to see the dust and gas in the star-forming region of the emission/reflection nebula NGC-6729.
