Description

Well, in Finland during the Perseids the night is never really dark and close to the capital area there is always light pollution. I made plans for several locations but due to cloud coverage forecast I ended up in 4th location in my priority list for this year's Perseids. So, no clouds, which was excellent but this year the light pollution came with a twist

This is a combination of all the Perseids that my camera sensor caught and which were not drowned behind the blazing Auroras (or behind the trees). Photographed in Porkkalanniemi, Finland right by the Baltic Sea shore. All images are taken between 23:24 and 02:07 on the night between Aug 12th and 13th. I have 3 revisions shown here as I had a pleasant problem of selecting nice backgrounds from several hundred shots, and I frankly cannot really decide which is the best. And actually I still feel that maybe I could tweak this and that but one has to let go at some point. Improvement ideas are, as always, welcomed though!

During the nigh I talked for quite a bit with a fellow "night-owl" and I was actually amazed what his iPhone could do while imaging Auroras. We packed our gear a bit after 2 am and finally around 3 am I was sleeping under this same very sky where the shooting starts continued their show and Auroras were most likely still dancing. A few hours later just before 6 am I woke up as ravens were having a morning debate close to my tent. I got up, enjoyed the already bright early morning skies, ate some breakfast, packed my stuff, drove back to civilization and went into meetings a bit tired but happy!

Sony A7RIV, Samyang 12 mm fisheye @ f/2.8, iso 1600, exposure time 4 seconds. I took 2054 frames during that night and while the Auroras were a constant companion, I also made a timelapse video of the night. Unfortunately the dew heater was malfunctioning so the latter part of the timelapse is not A-grade. However, at the end part of the video in the top right hand corner area you can start to see the sea and me & my talking buddy moving and waiving hands etc. The lights in the trees are not ours but were caused by other people packing their stuff. As the file is fairly big I uploaded it into YouTube as I don't know if such a big file is OK to upload here. Link to the timelapse, if interested, is here: https://youtu.be/k0gU3BCWfcg This should be available with reasonable resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) after YouTube has properly processed it.
