Description

NGC 2903 is a barred spiral galaxy in Leo located about 30 million light years from the Milky Way.

This target was a test of the bin 1 mode of the ASI 294mm camera. The default mode is an internal bin 2, but ASI unlocked the bin 1 mode after I purchased it. When using the bin 1 mode you give up 1 stop of dynamic range according to a SharpCap analysis (at gain 120), but you go from 4.6um to 2.3um pixels. At 4.6um, I am just a little under sampled and at 2.3um, I am over sampled. Under ideal seeing, this camera offers the possibility for doing high resolution galaxy imaging on medium focal length scope. Unfortunately, the condition for this image were not as ideal as I would like. Still, I felt the experiment was a success.

The next thing I will try with this camera is imaging with a subframe at bin 1. Full 94MB subframes are a killer to deal with considering processing time, storage and moving data from my remote observatory to home.

Description: I realized the image on astrobin was over over exposed compared to my local working copy. I had a temporary adjustment (PixInsight - STF) in place on my local copy that was not saved. This version more represents what I was going for.
