Description

This object is a rarely imaged galaxy cluster of about 10 galaxies located 250 million light years away in the constellation of Lacerta at a declination of +37 degrees. The main galaxy at the center of the image, NGC 7242, is a huge elliptical which spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view. At that distance, this corresponds to a diameter of 220,000 light years.

An oddly shaped galaxy can be seen within the extent of the outer region of the NGC 7242 galaxy, just below and slightly to the right of its core. This galaxy is IC 5195, as indicated on the Astrobin mouseover. It is the same distance away as NGC 7242 and appears to be a disturbed companion, although I could not find any information which confirms this.

Many other galaxies are seen in the image. Most of these are about the same distance away as NGC 7242 and are members of the same galaxy cluster.

This galaxy cluster did not have enough members to be included as an Abell galaxy cluster (which has a stated 50 member minimum, although many other smaller clusters were included), and had too many members to be included as a Hickson galaxy cluster (which contain 4 to 7 members).
