Description

This object, also known as NGC 6217, is a barred spiral galaxy located 65 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Minor at a declination of +78 degrees. The bright region of this 13.9 magnitude galaxy spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a width of 40,000 light years. The faint outer arms extend out to a diameter of 65,000 light years.

Arp included this galaxy as the 185th entry in his catalog in the category of "Galaxies with Narrow Filaments", although I have no idea what that means. This galaxy has an unusual arm structure but is not “peculiar” enough in my view to have been included in the Arp catalog.

However, things are a bit amiss here. The arms connect to the core at odd angles. The core is designated as barred, but to me the “bar” in this case looks a bit like two arms which tie into the core at a 180 degree angle. Numerous bright star regions are visible throughout the arms. The arms of this galaxy look like they have been disturbed by an interaction with another galaxy at some point in the past.
