Description

This object is a rarely imaged spiral galaxy located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +44 degrees. This magnitude 10 galaxy, with a surface brightness of 13.3, spans 6.7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 120,000 light years.

Despite the view being clouded somewhat by some dust, this is a beautiful galaxy with interesting structure. The inner region has a small bright core surrounded by a faint ring. The outer region is flocculent, with its dust lanes providing an interesting 3D look. We are seeing the galaxy just 30 degrees from an edge-on view, so that the dust lanes on the bottom side towards us are much more visible than the lanes on the other side.
