Description

This was an "extra" image I targeted while I was waiting for the Soul Nebula to clear a tree in my back yard. Over a week of clear nights, I was able to collect enough data to produce this wide-field of the Bubble Nebula.

This twelfth-magnitude planetary nebula is located about 11,000 light years distant in the constellation Cassiopeia. Its relative brightness in the OIII emission line is what makes it stand out so well against the background nebulosity. I have seen and admired many close-ups of this nebula but never appreciated how many other interesting objects are nearby. I was glad to see that several of them could be framed pleasingly in a wider field with my 80 mm refractor.
