Description

Core of the Carina Nebula about 8500 light years from earth, within the Carina-Sagittarius arm of our home Milky Way galaxy.

Imaged from our backyard last Friday night/Saturday morning.

A Ha-RGB image of part of the Great Nebula in Carina.

The hypergiant star Eta Carinae and several star clusters illuminate the surrounding molecular gas clouds. Eta Carinae has a luminosity around 5 million times that of the sun. The dark rifts are thick knots of gas and dusk that are so thick they appear opaque. The dark projecting spots along the upper edge of the 'dark rift' are Bok Globules (isolated and relatively small dark nebulae containing dense cosmic dust and gas from which star formation may take place).

The entire Carina Nebula spans approximately 300 light years, compared with the 4 light years between our sun and the nearest star Proxima Centauri.

Here the strong Ha (hydrogen alpha) signal has been layered as a luminance layer (to boost textural detail within the image) while the broad-band red, green and blue wavelengths are matched to RGB to yield a reasonably true colour rendition of the beautiful Carina Nebula.
