Description

Messier 83 is a grand design spiral galaxy about 15 million light years distant in the southern constellation of Hydra, making it one of the closest and brightest spiral galaxies in our sky. It is estimated to be about half the mass of the Milky Way.

M83 was discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille on February 23, 1752 from the Cape of Good Hope and added to the Messier catalogue in March 1781.
