Description

A perennial favourite with observers and imagers alike - this bright planetary nebula is a gem, showing off lots of colour and detail in an almost symmetrical 'face on' aspect. It lies approximately 6,500 LY from earth, and consists of a double shell, which is clearly visible in my image (mouseover for a close up). Expanding at ~70,000 mph, the bubbles in the core (just about visible as small dark rings) are expanding with 900,000 mph stellar winds! High resolution images from Hubble, show light year long filaments in the outer shell (a hint of these is seen as lighter mottling). This PN appears to largely comprise ionised oxygen, with a lip of hydrogen, and very faint ring around the fringes of the outer shell.

I used short unguided exposures to capture this - 10s RGB and 15s with L-eNhance NB filter. I have blended these for a total integration of 1 hour, to try and retain some colour in the star field. Revision C is data from L-eNhance filter, and Revision D (mouseover) the same, scaled x 2.

It wasn't the best seeing and I ended up throwing away a lot of the subs, due to smearing. Another approach might be to collect really short 1" exposures, to overcome this, but I expect my laptop (and patience) would explode under the pressure of so much processing. Nice that the moon is on the wane now, and skies still clear, if a little hazy and unsteady.
