Description

This object, also known as IC 972, is a rarely imaged faint planetary nebula located 8000 light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of -17 degrees. This 13.9 magnitude nebula spans almost 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 2 light years.

The nebula is a fairly typical PN in size and color, with a hydrogen rim and an oxygen interior. But it does have a surprising amount of faint structure. The upper left quadrant of the nebula is more diffuse and appears to be interacting with the ISM.

A faint star is visible at the nebula center, which could be the source star or could be a superimposed star, as the star at 1 o’clock appear to be. I find it odd that the immediate area surrounding the nebula is so void of brighter stars.
