Description

This is Messier 81, known as Bode's Galaxy, and originally called Bode's Nebula (before we had telescopes good enough to resolve these objects). It was discovered in 1774 by Johann Bode. It's located in Ursa Major (the Big Dipper) and is 11.7 million light years away.
