Description

Sh2-87 and Sh2-88 constitute, together with the nearby SH2-86, the edges of a kind of "bubble" centered on the core of Vulpecula OB1, one OB association located in the initial stretch of the Orion Arm at about 6500- 7500 light years from the solar system; Within this bubble are columnar structures of gas, similar in appearance to the famous Pillars of Creation visible within the Eagle Nebula (M 16). The formation of these structures, in general, is most likely due to the strong disintegrating and erosive action of radiation and the stellar wind. Massive stars located near fairly dense nebulous areas, gradually consuming denser nebulous cocoons by forming long hairs behind them. The "tops" of these clouds, which are in direct contact with the radiation of nearby stars, are compressed until they collapse at various points, thus generating protostars.
