Description

Crescent moons, whether waxing (as here) or waning, are generally more difficult to image well than other phases because the moon is lower in the sky when it is dark enough to shoot (e.g., no sooner than the start of  twilight in the evening), especially in the summer months. That puts more atmosphere in the way, which usually increases the negative effects of atmospheric turbulence.

This prime-focus image is no exception. It is a little softer than the gibbous phases I have imaged. I used a shorter shutter speed (1/320 second) along with a higher ISO (800) than usual in order to attempt to freeze the seeing as much as possible. That probably didn't help much.

The Meade MTS-SN6 is a 6-inch f/5 Schmidt-Newtonian telescope from the 1980's.
