Description

We took a break at a cabin at Hume Lake in Sequoia National Forest for most of the week and I took along the trusty Canon 70D because you don’t always need a telescope to take some fun astro pictures. For you survivors of the year 2020 who are wagering what calamity will befall us next, you’ll be glad to know we have a significant naked eye comet that just popped on the scene about a week ago. It’s surpassing expectations for comet viewers after a couple comets earlier this year sadly got melted by the sun and didn’t amount to anything. I got up early on two different mornings to observe/photograph the comet and even convinced my youngest daughter Betsy to come along on the second day. This comet was discovered just this year on March 27th by the NEOWISE (Near Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) satellite, hence its name, and reached perihelion on July 3rd. Its closest approach to Earth will be on July 22nd and it should be visible in the evening later this month. It’s a naked eye comet at this point, bright enough to have a significant reflection on the lake in the image, but will be better if observed with binoculars. Venus and M45 can also be seen in this landscape image.
